Your first round of golf is a lot more fun when you are not scrambling in the parking lot wondering if you forgot something. Here is a simple, realistic packing list.
The essentials
- Clubs and a bag — borrowed or rented is completely fine for round one.
- Golf balls — bring more than you think. A dozen is not overkill for a beginner.
- Tees — a handful of wooden or plastic tees.
- A glove — optional, but most players use one.
- Ball marker and pitch repair tool — a coin works as a marker in a pinch.
Comfort items
- Water — walking 18 holes is more exercise than people expect.
- Sunscreen and a hat.
- A snack for the back nine.
- A small towel for wiping clubs and hands.
What to wear
Most public courses are relaxed: a collared shirt or neat athletic top, shorts or pants, and sneakers or golf shoes. If you are unsure, check the course website or just call — asking about the dress code is completely normal.
What you can skip
Rangefinders, fancy accessories, fourteen clubs, and any pressure to play well. Your first round is about getting familiar with the rhythm of the game. Keep the load light and enjoy it.
