Golf bags come in more varieties than seems necessary, but the choice is simple once you answer one question: how do you usually get around the course?
The three main types
- Stand bags — lightweight with pop-out legs. The best all-rounder: works walking, on a push cart, or on a riding cart. If you are buying one bag, buy this.
- Cart bags — bigger, heavier, tons of storage, no legs. Great if you always ride or always use a push cart.
- Carry / Sunday bags — minimalist bags for a handful of clubs. Perfect for nine-hole evening rounds and the driving range.
Features that matter
- Dividers — a 4-way top is fine; 14-way keeps clubs organized and quiet.
- Strap system — a good double strap makes walking dramatically more comfortable.
- Pockets — look for an insulated drink pocket and a soft-lined valuables pocket.
- Weight — for walkers, under 5 lbs empty is the target.
Bottom line
Most everyday golfers are happiest with a light stand bag with a comfortable double strap. Buy a color you like — you are going to look at this thing for years.
