What makes a course beginner-friendly

- Open layouts — fewer forced carries over water and fewer tight tree-lined holes.
- Reasonable green fees — learning is easier when a round costs $25 instead of $95.
- A relaxed vibe — municipal and public courses are generally the most welcoming.
Where to look in North Carolina
- Municipal courses — most NC cities, including Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, run affordable city courses that welcome new players.
- Par-3 and executive courses — shorter courses are the single best place to learn on-course golf. Rounds are quicker and pressure is low.
